Wood Iz Good offers an annual ‘check-up’ that includes washing your logs and going over a checklist of potential changes that happened within the past year; such as squirrels entering the home and finishes coming off the logs. We check the condition of the finishes, especially on the south and north side; any failed chalking or chinking, potential water penetration, and trees and bushes that have grown too close to the log walls. I see many different log and timber homes every year; I noticed that often there is little or no maintenance done since it was last refinished. I am surprised that many houses have never been washed which should be done annually; it will extend the life of the finishes by 3 to 5 years. One must also think of what has settled on the log surface such as dust, airborne chemicals, contaminants, bird feces and insect remains. I believe that many of the problems I see in log and timber houses could have been prevented with regular maintenance. Preventive maintenance will also contribute in keeping the beauty and value of your home.
